How to Eliminate Duplicate Assets

Why this piece is featured

Teaches the reader to diagnose the problem — reading a spreadsheet, matching by serial number, name, or MAC address — rather than just clicking a fix, and states plainly when an issue isn't worth resolving.

This article covers what duplicate assets are in Lifecycle Manager, and the steps to take to keep data in your integrated tools consistent.

What are duplicate assets?

Duplicate assets are multiple records for the same hardware asset syncing from the same integration. They are not single records for the same asset syncing from different integrations — that's an expected part of data syncing and shouldn't affect your total asset count.

Do I need to resolve duplicate assets?

Not all duplicate assets are problematic. Lifecycle Manager groups identified duplicates together into a single asset record and prioritizes data from the most recently created duplicate, so duplicates don't affect your asset count and generally aren't a major problem. That said, duplicates can indicate poor data quality across your systems and sometimes create conflicts in the app, so it's worth reviewing and resolving them periodically.

Before you begin

Who can use this feature? Lifecycle Manager users with Manage Sync Settings permissions. What you'll need: Access to delete or archive records in your integrated tools.

Resolving duplicate assets

Download the Duplicate Hardware Assets spreadsheet

  1. Hover over the Settings icon and click Integrations, then Issues in the left navigation panel.
  2. Look for the Duplicate assets alert under Active Issues and click Download Duplicate Hardware Assets Spreadsheet.

Review the spreadsheet

Each row is a separate record syncing from one of your integrations. Rows sharing the same number in the Dupe Group column represent the same asset — each Dupe Group is a single grouped asset in Lifecycle Manager.

Clean up duplicates in your integrations

For each Dupe Group, determine which duplicate asset is stale, find it in your integration (the Source column's direct link helps here), and delete or archive it. Repeat for all Dupe Groups in the spreadsheet.

Sync Lifecycle Manager

Go to Settings > Integrations and click the Sync Now icon. Once the fresh sync completes, check the Issues page to confirm the duplicate alert is resolved.
